ATLAS SCT MODULE PRODUCTION IN 1998 ___________________________________ Dear SCT Colleagues, As you know, the recent SCT Institute meetings at CERN, agreed a programme of module production for 1998, and asked us to co-ordinate the resourcing and planning of this work. We believe this will require close contact with those responsible for the work of the seven production clusters, and an efficient flow of information and ideas between all those involved. The following note is intended to start such interaction, and is being sent initially to colleagues known to us as having responsibility for specific clusters or production labs within a cluster. ==> Please delegate such responsibility if it is appropriate and let <== ==> us know the additional names for future circulation. <== The present note is being sent initally to the following: Cluster || Contact __________________________________________________________ Japan : Y Unno USA : C Haber Scandinavia : T Ekelof/(S Stapnes) UK Barrel : A Carter Central European : H-G Moser/(B Vaneijk) CERN,Geneva,Austra. : T Niinikoski/ A Clark/ G Taylor/(E Perrin) UK Forward : N Jackson/(J Fuster) ___________________________________________________________________________ This note replaces the "needs for 1998" paper that was available at CERN, and we would request that you indicate this to your cluster collaborators in your individual discussions. There are THREE appended sections: [A] referring to thermal modules, [B] dealing with required numbers of electrical modules for 1998, including specifications and timescales, and [C] a draft enquiry for component provision and responsibilities, which includes suggested names and institutes. Please return a completed version of appendices [A] and [C] for your CLUSTER to us together with any comments and corrections (by the end of Jan 98 meetings at CERN), or ask us for clarification of any points that are not clear. Pleas also confirm your contributions to [B]. Thank you for your help, Best regards, Nobu and Tony. Overview ________ The following assumptions are made within the proposed planning: [1] Thermal modules in general are for home-based assessments and will be actioned by individual institutes/clusters, but components can be organised collectively for items that are identical to those used in versions of SCT electrical modules, and payments will normally be expected to come from the requesting institute. The modules will be referred to as type[BT&FT], for barrel and forward thermal respectively. [2] Module production for 1998 will have an initial period of prototype construction, with designs that are evolving, but all will use ATLAS SCT FE electronics. Before mid-1998 MODULE-0 designs are to be agreed and all modules produced for inclusion in Systems Tests at CERN are of this type; to be known as type[B0&F0], for barrel and forward respectively, and will use final ATLAS SCT detector technology. [3] BARREL modules for this initial period, in early 1998, will correspond to the latest drawings (060), and will therefore have geometrical parts detailed accordingly, and be compatible with single-purchase ordering where appropriate, and will be known as type[B-1]. Although the 060 series is for the wide (diagonotic) hybrid, this accommodates both the wide and the narrow (standard) hybrid, and more importantly the '98 bracket for electrical modules is for the wide hybrid. [4] FORWARD module designs are still evolving, and for the immediate future some component pieces will be cluster-specific, and be parts of pre- prototype modules, and will be known as type[F-2]. As soon as possible in 1998, when a single agreed design is available, and appropriate for common production at all clusters, it will be designated as type[F-1], and should come within the overall co-ordinated programme for procuring parts. The projected numbers of electrical modules for production during 1998 are between 70 and 80, with approximately equal numbers for forward and barrel, ie around 35 and 40, respectively. Including losses in production this will require around 400 silicon wafers and 1000 ABCD (or their equivalent in CAFE-M+ABC), and should result in a total of more than 30 ATLAS SCT module 0s overall. We propose that following confirmation of the module production numbers, we arrange and co-ordinate the appropriate supply of module components to the Clusters. Below are the three appendices, [A],[B],[C]. The numbers proposed in appendix B are the result of compromises between module numbers requested for the 1998 systems tests at CERN and those proposed in the overall SCT modules production programme for 1998. ************************************************************************** Appendix [A]: THERMAL MODULE PRODUCTION in 1998 The thermal modules will be fabricated in order to make actual measurements of thermal profiles and to carry out quantitative studies of thermal runaway and thermo-distortions. Some modules will also be required to be part of assemblies to study collective thermal management and overall cooling, and others will be used as practice towards the construction of the real modules. Each cluster is requested to provide information on the number of thermal modules they intend to make, and an estimate of the production time- schedule, and indicate where they would like any component items to be purchased through other institutes (see Appendix C). ______________________________________________________________________________ CLUSTER NAME: ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ | # of THERMAL [FT] | Production || # of THERMAL [BT] | Production | | modules | Time-scale || modules | Time-scale | |___________________|_____________||____________________|_____________| | | || | | |___________________|_____________||____________________|_____________| | | || | | |___________________|_____________||____________________|_____________| | | || | | |___________________|_____________||____________________|_____________| Items to be purchased collectively [see Appendix C for co-ordination]: Mechanical parts | # for FT | # for BT | ___________________________________________________________________ Dummy/mechanical grade detectors | | | ___________________________________________________________________ Irradiated mech. grade detectors | | | ____________________________________________________________________ BeO construction pieces | | | ____________________________________________________________________ TPG baseboards | | | ____________________________________________________________________ Blank hybrids(BeO, etc) | | | ____________________________________________________________________ Fan-ins (glass, etc) | | | ____________________________________________________________________ ******************************************************************************* Appendix [B]: ELECTRICAL MODULE PRODUCTION FOR 1998 Please confirm the proposed production schedule for your CLUSTER, and can institutes discuss within each cluster and provide one agreed response per cluster. ___________________________________________________________________________ MODULE TYPE: B-1 | B0 || F-2 | F-1 | F0 | ___________________________________________________________________________| |By end|May to |By end|Sept to||By end|May to |Aug to |By end| CLUSTER : |April |end July|August|end Dec||April |end July|end Dec|Dec | |______________________________________________________________| Japan | 2 | 2 | 4 | 4 || | | | | |______________________________||______________________________| USA | 2 | 1 | 2 | 2 || | | | | |______________________________||______________________________| Scandin. | 2 | 1 | 2 | 2 || | | | | |______________________________||______________________________| UK-Barrel | 2 | 2 | 4 | 4 || | | | | |______________________________||______________________________| Cent. It is proposed that each CLUSTER arranges the financing of their own components through the named person at the providing institute, for items needed collectivelly. Alternatively the named person is authorised by the co-ordinating institute to make provision to requesting clusters and to arrange the necessary reimbursement. ______________________________________________________________________________ Acquisition of mechanical parts |Co-ordinate |Module type & |Req'rd by |purchase & |# pieces req'rd|(month) |distribution | | ______________________________________________________________________________ BeO frames/pieces | RAL | | |[R Apsimon] | | | | | | | | _____________________________________________________________________________ TPG baseboards | Uppsala | | |[O.
