The testbeam requests for 2010 have been sent to the SPS coordinator. All ATLAS related requests (IBL, PPS, 3D and diamond (dPix)) have been entered in our Google calendar, which you can view below.

For more information look at the DESY testbeam page.

Testbeams in 2009

The Planar Pixel Sensors Group didn't request any test beam periods for 2009.
However, we were assured by the ATLAS Testbeam coordinator that it is possible to piggy-back on testbeam periods allocated to other R&D projects. These testbeams will predominantly take place in the SPS beamline H6 in CERNs Prevessin area.

General testbeam information

Measurement Program

Here is a very first version of a proposed measurement program. If you are missing measurements (or doubting my sanity based on this list) feel free to contact me.
This program is also awaiting input from the regular EVO meeting on testbeams and irradiations. It will also be coordinated with the diamond and 3D programs to facilitate comparison of the results.

Measurements

  1. charge collection efficiency
  2. spatial resolution
  3. in-time efficiency

Parameters

  1. accumulated dose/fluence
  2. track incidence angle
  3. bias voltage
  4. position on the sensor (edge, corner, close to guard ring ...)

For these measurements the aim would be to record data from one or more runs per parameter, each of them with about 100k - 300k tracks.
I don't have a clear idea as to how long one run with 100k tracks will take. For the time being I calculate something like one week real time for a measurement of whatever quantity you are interested in, taking data at different angles of the DUT with respect to the beam, multiple 100k track runs per incidence angle.

Based on discussions with Beniamino Di Girolamo I expect we can put 2 or 3 DUT in the beam, more or less at any given time. This puts the number of DUTs we can measure this year at 15 - 20.

Material needed for CERN testbeams

To run a DUT in the CERN testbeam we need to provide at least one TPCC/TPLL setup including VME crate and power-supplies for each DUT (no longer necessary if a MCC board is used). NO setups are available at CERN.

In order to be compatible with the EUDET the TPLL has to modified. That involves soldering in an additional connector and upgrading the firmware. This is a list of TPLLs that were already modified:

TPLL serial number TPLL Board Version VHDL version number old VHDL version number after modification Home Institute/Owner contact person comment (e.g. already used with testbeam setup/when?/history) Dortmund Tracking Number (Barcode/shortened) data
16 V4.0 Rev. A00 unknown 32 Dortmund Daniel Münstermann   94d7326b
81 V4.0 Rev. B00 20 32 Munich Michael Beimforde 14-05-2010 Modified and tested in Dortmund, stopped working after first test 27-05-2010 TPLL is successfully repaired, the wrong initialisation modus was set due to a faulty connection, a bypass wire was added between the middle pin of JP2 and the AB2(M0) pin of the FPGA, tested again with digital scans and threshold scan, everything looks fine besides the 16BIT SCAN 1-06-2010 sent to Munich together with TPCC ser.#14 and newly installed TurboDAQ PC 9588c29c TPLL_SERIAL_81_POST_MODIFICATION_TEST_10_5A.zip TPLL_81_photos.zip
6 V4.0 Rev. A00 15 32 Bonn/CERN? Alessandro La Rosa? 28-05-2010 Modified and tested with digital scans and threshold scan in Dortmund, a few errors during FIFO test, but everything else looks fine f1ce7d22 TPLL_SERIAL_6_POST_MODIFICATION_TEST_10_5A.zip
76 V4.0 Rev. B00 20 32 Bonn/CERN? Alessandro La Rosa? 28-05-2010 Modified and tested with digital scans and threshold scan in Dortmund, everything looks okay besides the FIFO Scan 38613fee TPLL_SERIAL_76_POST_MODIFICATION_TEST_10_5A.zip
77 V4.0 Rev. B00 unknown 32 Dortmund Daniel Münstermann Modified in 2009, used in DESY testbeam in May 2010; 28-05-2010 tested with digital scans and threshold scan, everything works --> reference 857d5565 TPLL_SERIAL_77_POST_MODIFICATION_TEST_10_5A.zip

Although it is not necessary to modify the TPCC probably it should be encouraged also to keep track of those that are known to work with the testbeam setup/available:

TPCC serial number VHDL version number channel # known to be in working condition Home Institute/Owner contact person comment (e.g. already used with testbeam setup/when?)
39 31 2 TU Dortmund
14   channel #0 broken Munich

MCC-Board serial number VHDL version number channel # known to be in working condition Home Institute/Owner contact person comment (e.g. already used with testbeam setup/when?)
      TU Dortmund

The beam telescope including power supplies, trigger electronics and NIM electronics needed for trigger and synchronisation is provided by the Pernegger group.

The cold box that was used for pixel testbeams in earlier years has been refurbished by technicians in genova and has been used for the 3D testbeam in march. It is currently being transported to the H6A area to be used for diamond and other testbeams.

Preparation

In order to use the available beam time as effectively as possible a number of preparations are needed.

  1. The DUTs have to be mounted on a standard ATLAS pixel single-chip card. The mechanical holders are tailored to hold these boards, no other mechanics is available.
  2. The DUTs need to be fully characterised and should arrive at CERN including their test data and the final FE-I configuration you want to run at.
  3. People taking part in the testbeam need to get a CERN dosimeter. For short term visitors (<2 months) no medical certificate is needed. However, take into account that going through the formalities may take up to half a day. So please arrive at CERN in time. The necessary documents will be linked on this page later.

Beam Telescopes

Here I will collect information on testbeam telescopes like performance, DAQ software and interfaces, availability, etc.
The sequence in which the telescope systems appear on this page only represents the sequence in which I learn about them...

Bonn ATLAS Telescope (BAT)

The BAT is used in the testbeam measurements that we could piggy-back on.
It is easily integrated with a TPLL/TPCC ATLAS readout system, TurboDAQ based DAQ software already integrated with the telescope DAQ. This makes it more or less a plug-and-play solution for ATLAS Pixel compatible devices.

The BAT currently has only three telescope plains functional, an additional one has been sent to Ohio for repairs. With three reference plains the accuracy for the prediction where a track hits the DUT is limited to about 13um.

More information on the BAT can be found in this paper.

EUDET Telescope

Information on the telescope can be found here.
The EUDET telescope comprises 6 layers of monolithic MIMOSA sensors. It reaches a spatial resolution around 3 um.
The telescope can be rented from EUDET and comes with mechanics for the telescope itself as well as for the DUT (including translation and rotation stages), trigger logic and a DAQ PC. The DAQ system is C++ based and it should be rather easy to integrate a DUT DAQ system.

Comment from Ingrid: The DAQ from the telescope and the DUT can be integrated on a very low level just via the trigger logic unit. Then data is merged offline. For this the ATLAS DAQ just has to comply to the trigger handshake (i.e. accepting a veto). The EUDET group will then provide files with the track information. It would be recommendable to read the event number to make sure that the synchronisation is ok. The EUDET Telescope will be available at SPS H6B from mid June till probably November. It is already booked from mid July to the end of September. Parasitic use of the EUDET telescope in parallel to other ATLAS activities is possible.

An effort to integrate the TurboDAQ system with the EUDET DAQ on the level described by Ingrid has started in Dortmund.
At the moment I am evaluating the possibility to use the EUDET telescope for testbeams in 2010.

Voltages etc.

  • EU telescope sensors: AGILENT E 3644A
    • +8V for the sensors, current: ~ 2.7A - 2.8A (if below the sensors should be reprogrammed)
    • +6V for the clock buffers connected to VME boards

  • distances of the DOBOX see attachments
